Transcendental Meditation

Because of its uniqueness, Transcendental Meditation needs to be held apart from other "self-development" programs. Taught by His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, it derives from the oldest system of knowledge known to man: the Vedic tradition of India. Maharishi has distilled the kernel, the fundamental element, of the Vedic system, and designed a program that allows everyone to experience this essential knowledge. With the "Science of Creative Intelligence", as it's called, he has successfully closed the loop that connects modern objective science with the ancient science of consciousness, the knowledge of the knower. Scientific Research
Maharishi is a modern-day sage who represents a long line of ancient masters of the Ved. He is quite well-known and highly respected in India as well as in the West - indeed, all over the world. Since Maharishi began teaching the TM technique about 50 years ago, he has attracted the support of a number of distinguished scientists, scholars and physicians, Western as well as Eastern, and there is now a substantial amount of documented scientific research about the practice, particularly regarding the health benefits. There was a recent study, for example, that demonstrated that regular practice of TM reduced your chances of having a stroke. By practicing TM, people actually changed their physiology – opening up arteries that feed the brain by a measurable amount. The Vedic system is very broad, with 40 branches that cover such diverse areas as health, nutrition, home construction, agriculture, astrology, music and government. Vedic knowledge had become scattered over the centuries, but is now being restored and revitalized through the efforts Maharishi. Given that the Ved originates from an ancient, indigenous culture, its breadth is quite astounding. Yet the TM technique stands on its own as something that by itself can lead to clear thinking, growth of character, improved physical and mental health, and higher states of consciousness for individuals, and also for communities. There are a number of resources available for folks interested in Maharishi's spiritual regeneration programs.
