Alternative Health Care and Indigenous Practices Indigenous Practices ... Five
hundred years ago European explorers began the invasion and colonization
of the Americas. For centuries Westerners have viewed the conquest of
indigenous peoples as a natural progession towards what we consider modern
civilization. Not only in the Americas, but in Africa, Asia, and Australia,
has the relentless march of Westernization taken its toll. In recent years
people have begun to relize how devestating this progression actually
was, not just in terms of human sufferning, but also with regard to the
loss of indigenous knowledge. The ancient wisdom - the understanding of
life itself - has been fragmented and scattered among the surviving descendents
of the indigenous tribes and families, but it has not been totally lost.
Among those who are working to recover and preserve indigenous knowledge,
one of the best known, and most respected is Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, whose
Transcendental Mediatation program and its associated practices offer
a direct connection to the oldest and perhaps greatest of all traditions
of knowledge: the Vedas of ancient India. Click
Alternative Health Care ... Among the various practices and philosophies that are being re-discovered, those that deal with human health are among the most widely adopted. An individual's normal state is one of good health. The body does a superb job of maintaining that normalcy, and restoring it if something is out of balance. Regarding alternative approaches to health, those that seem most effective are the ones which emphasize prevention. I've discovered that releasing stress with meditation – specifically Transcendental Meditation (see the TM Resources page) – is highly beneficial to my own personal state of health.
